A comparative analysis of robot-assisted liver resection (RALR) and laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) for liver cavernous hemangiomas was undertaken in this study, focusing on perioperative outcomes and the assessment of procedural feasibility and safety.
Our institution carried out a retrospective study of prospectively acquired data on consecutive cases of liver cavernous hemangioma treatment involving RALR (n=43) and LLR (n=244) patients, spanning the period between February 2015 and June 2021. Through the utilization of propensity score matching, an evaluation of patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and intraoperative and postoperative outcomes was undertaken, followed by comparison.
A substantial reduction in postoperative hospital stay was seen in the RALR group, demonstrating a statistically significant effect (P=0.0016). This study sought to determine the characteristics of treatment decision-making (DM) preferences, general self-efficacy (SE), and fear of progression (FoP) in couples managing advanced prostate cancer.
The exploratory research project, involving 96 patients with advanced prostate cancer and their spouses, encompassed responses to the Control Preferences Scale (CPS, on decision-making), the General Self-Efficacy Short Scale (ASKU), and the short form of the Fear of Progression Questionnaire (FoP-Q-SF). Correlations were subsequently drawn after evaluating patients' spouses using the corresponding questionnaires.
Among patients (61%) and spouses (62%), active disease management (DM) was the overwhelmingly favored approach. A significant portion of patients (25%) and spouses (32%) expressed a preference for collaborative DM, in contrast to a smaller portion of patients (14%) and spouses (5%) who favored passive DM. A markedly higher FoP was observed in spouses than in patients, representing a statistically significant difference (p<0.0001). Comparative analysis of SE between patients and their spouses did not reveal a significant difference (p=0.0064). FoP and SE scores were negatively correlated among patients (r = -0.42) and spouses (r = -0.46), with statistically significant results (p < 0.0001) in both cases. DM preference was not found to correlate with the SE and FoP parameters.
High FoP scores and low general SE scores are related factors in both patients with advanced prostate cancer (PCa) and their spouses. The implementation of image-guided adaptive brachytherapy for uterine cervical cancer is swift; however, intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy procedures are slower, likely because direct needle insertion into tumors represents a more invasive treatment approach. With the backing of the Japanese Society for Radiology and Oncology, a hands-on seminar on image-guided adaptive brachytherapy, including intracavitary and interstitial techniques for uterine cervical cancer, was conducted on November 26, 2022, aiming to increase the speed of brachytherapy implementation. This hands-on seminar is the subject of this article, specifically analyzing the evolution of participant confidence in performing intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy before and after the session.
The seminar's morning program comprised lectures on intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy, while the evening schedule featured hands-on training on needle insertion and contouring, alongside exercises on dose calculation using the radiation treatment system. A survey concerning participants' assurance in performing intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy was completed both prior to and after the seminar. Participants rated their confidence on a scale from 0 to 10, with higher values corresponding to more confidence.
Attending the meeting were fifteen physicians, six medical physicists, and eight radiation technologists, representing eleven institutions. The seminar resulted in a statistically significant improvement in confidence (P<0.0001).
